Chapter 18

Lily

Before I know it, Jason is at my door, ready to take me to Helena’s house. We have a good giggle on the way up. He’s started seeing someone and looks genuinely happy about it, like a love-struck teenager. I rile him up about it and by the time we get to Helena’s place, we’re both gossiping like a couple of teenage girls before a big date.

Helena’s cottage is situated far away from anything and anyone. It reminds me of my old house, back in England, which basically sits in the middle of the New Forest. Helena and Jess are completely cut off here, but maybe that’s intentional. It could be Evan’s idea to keep her isolated from friends and family; it’s standard behavior for men like him. Whoever made the decision to live here, it’s clear that Helena has made it her own with a beautiful garden full to the brim with flowers and quaint ornaments that are reminiscent of a children’s book. As soon as I get out of the car, there is a multitude of scents invading my nostrils and I breathe it all in with vigor.

“I’ll see you in a couple of hours,” I tell Jason as I turn to face him like an old friend, “or if I phone you, whichever is sooner.”

“Ok, Lily, I’ll be waiting,” he replies before walking around to open the door.

“Jason I can open my own door,” I tell him at the same time as I let myself out, “but thank you.”

I walk up to the large red door and ring the doorbell. I then turn back to Jason and cross my fingers. He grins but waits for a little while before driving away. A few moments later, Helena appears from the side of the house wearing gardening gloves and a sun hat. She looks like she should be showing off a British countryside cottage on a Sunday afternoon program on BBC One.

“Lily?” she calls with a quick wave.

I walk around to meet her, hugging her to be polite, even though I always feel awkward when hugging people I don’t know that well. I take in how tiny her frame is and how she goes just as rigid as I do when being hugged by a stranger. It seems weird considering how affectionate her brothers and parents are; something is definitely not right with her.

“Hi, Helena.” I look around to see if Jess is with her. “Is it just us two?”

“Yes, Jess is at a friend’s house. I thought it best I didn’t apologize for her father in front of her.”

She looks embarrassed and it has me feeling guilty for being here.

“Oh, Helena, really, you don’t need to do that. It’s not your fault if someone else behaves...a certain way. I just thought it would be nice to come and get to know you better.”

I smile, hoping to put her at ease. She smiles back with what looks like relief, then gestures toward the back of the house. I
